Practice Session
This weekend has been very busy. I have had two girl gymnastic shoots, a family session, and a toddler session right before the Super Bowl. On Saturday evening, since I had everything out, my youngest son ( Co ) help me do some practice sessions. Actually, I have been wanting to do more lessons from the Strobist site. But first, I work on getting the white background lighting the way I wanted. (more…)

Trip to Nicaragua
I have been wanting to get more pictures up from the trip back in October 2009. Each time I go I experience something new. I love the people of Nicaragua. They are down to earth and so genuine. Even through the poverty, they are happy with what they have. However, they work hard and find ways to earn a living. (more…)

Not sure if any of you know Jasmine Star. (more…)
Day 58: Tera Byte Drive
I just pick up a Samsung 1 TB drive from New Egg for $80. It came with a free docking station too. I have been wanting to find something that I can swap out drives on the fly. The Drobo still looks like an option down the road. But for now this will do me just find.
Taken with the iPhone. Looks like the light from the monitor bled over a lot.

Best Photography iPhone Apps
Found this blog post from twitter. It has some interesting apps that I would mine looking into. For instance the Pano app looks pretty neat. But for those that have the 3gs (Unlike me), you can check out the other photo apps that start using that nice camera and new OS features. So, check out the blog post and you might find a new iPhone photo app.
I couldn’t leave by adding an app that I like and use. It is called HDRCamera. This little nifty program changes the exposure and contrast on the image. I am not sure how this little app is doing it but normally you have three to six of the same image but all at different exposures. You use a HDR (High Dynamic Range) program to merge all the images into one though keeping the best parts of each image that was expose good. Anyway, you do some really neat things with an image. Here is what I did using HDRCamera.
The original image being converted using Art Contour HDR (There are few HDR filters that is app gives).
Image after conversion.
The saved image. Pretty neat.

New Facebook app
Finally, facebook release a new version of there iphone app. Since they updated facebook, there were several things that you just couldn’t do. Just looking at it, it looks like it will be much better. But I have to admit, it took a good while to load. Hopefully, that is just for the first time. Can’t wait to dig deeper into it.

Photo Books
It has been a week since my last post. Since then, I receive an 8×10 (landscape) photo book in the mail. The client from the 25th Anniversary post order one. I am very impressed with the book. Currently, I use blurb to make the photo books. They have several options with paper and the soft cover and such, but I pick the highest quality options with each book. They get better every year. No more dust jacket, the image is fully wrap and bound to the hardcover. I hope to start offering albums at some point but for now I will stick with the photo books. I can make 8×10, 13×11 and 12×12. Check out the 8×10 below.

Some fun with lighting
The other day Josh Mize (Phofab) came over with his stands and flashes. Using three flashes, we shot the following images with my camera as a commander. I have radio controls for my two flashes but it is always good to learn a new technique. I have a sb600 and an old Vivitar. Josh brought his sb800 and 600 (I think). We used three umbrellas too. The first two was use for the key light and the fill light. The third umbrella was used for back/hair light.
I went first.
Well, the lighting is good except you can see the light stand. Though, the image can be crop or the light stand removed. We didn’t take the time to use backgrounds but the love seat worked out. The fill light and the back light was set to TTL. The key light was set to half power (Josh correct me if I am wrong) and we narrowed the beam. The other two flashes the beam was set to wider setting.
In the picture above, you can see more of shadow on Josh than the picture of me. I actually like a little shadow. It gives it some depth. Also, we move the back light out of the way but it was still on. It isn’t as strong on Josh since the light is further from the subject. We didn’t change the power or the beam. But I do wonder if we did change the beam if it would have lit the back him better.
The pictures above are auto white balance. Josh uses a 18% gray card where I use what I call is a digital card (black, gray, white stripes. see below). You can purchase them here but I was all about DIY. I wanted to show Josh my workflow when it came to doing the exposure and white balance.
Here is Josh again with using the digital card (below). Notice that he is a little warmer than the previous pictures (I did not change any the images except for reducing them for the blog.). The image is suppose to be a little warmer but I also believe that my middle stripe is not 18% gray. The lighting for the taking the image has not changed at all. Since I did the exposure with the digital card, the exposure looks even. Before, we took a picture of each other, look at the histogram and adjusted for the correct exposure. The first image of Josh is still a good image.
In the next image, I turned off the back light and then put the other two lights on either side of Josh. I like the way that tuned out. Both lights still wrap around Josh so that you get some back lit.
On this next image, we took it down to just one light. We also widen the beam of the light. You can tell I didn’t adjust the WB. Each time you change the light, you need to reset your exposure and WB.
Ok, it is my turn again. Here I am facing the light but from the camera’s view, there is no light on my left side. If you look close, you can see the light source in my right eye.
One more image just for the heck of it. Still using one light but since the object is small the light wraps around it pretty good. Remember, the flash bean was widen earlier.
What did I learn from this fun practice (Granted these are items I knew but never got my hands dirty):
- When using more than one light, it is good practice to narrow the beam of the key light.
- Setting the camera to commander is great way to control multiple lights from one place.
- The back light is nice to have but it isn’t always necessary. One or Two lights might be all that is needed.
- Keep it simple.
Josh, thanks for comeing over and given me some great pointers. I can’t wait to use them again.
So, what do you think? What would you have done different (ie diffusers instead of umbrellas)? What are lighting techniques you like to use? Leave a comment and share it with us.

Bloggers Block…
Hmmm.. I imagine there is such a thing because I have had it. Though, this is a photog blog not a normal blog so I guess I have photog blogger block.
Having the three jobs (day job, part time, and the job I want) has been running its toll on me. Unfortunately, the blogging has been put to the side until I can catch my breath.
Just recently I have pick up another job (not really since it still pertains to photography). Even though I just started and my images need work, I have really enjoyed it. I am working as a independent contractor for a local photography business that does photography for little leagues (check them out at www.faulknercountyphoto.com). After we take some cool action shots, the parents are welcome to go online and purchase the prints.
The reason the images need work is that I am shooting from dusk till dark. I have to keep raising my ISO up so that I can keep my shutter at 1/400 – 1/500 (to get those nice action shots). The aperture on the 70-300mm lens is at the lowest which is f5.6. I can slap my 28-70mm lens on with f2.8 but that means I need to get closer to the action. With the smaller kids, I don’t mind that. But with the older kids, watch out. Even with the zoom, you need to have the other eye on the ball. Shooting at 1600ISO on my D40x is very noisy. This doesn’t help in selling prints larger than 4×6.
This leads me to my point. I gave in (yeah right, any excuse) and pick up the Nikon D700 with a Sigma f2.8 fix 70-200mm lens. Not only will I be able to bump up to 6400ISO, but I will have a lens that I can set the aperture for at any focal length. You all feel my pain, right?
Also, the D700 is a full frame camera. The D40x is not. I believe it is 1/5th the size of a full frame sensor. Don’t get me wrong, the D40x has been a great camera and it will not be going on the self anytime soon.

Day 38 – Yummy Sub
Quiznos is doing a one million sub give away. I just pick up mine this evening. I got the roast beef and cheddar. Yummy!! Looks like they have given away 150,511 subs. Don’t miss your chance.

Day 37 – Briday Fair
Sunday was a good day for the Bridal Fair. Met a lot wonderful brides. I was nervous going into it but once people started walking by I started warming up. I notice that you can be one that sits there and hope people come talk to you or you get out there and talk to them. Though, I still have long ways to go in selling myself. Having my wife and mom there meant a lot to me. They really help get me going. Thank you so much for your help. It means so much to me. I did take a few shots of my booth. Check them out below.

We were right next to the MarketPlace (A local Conway restaurant), and they were serving a chicken strawberry vinaigrette salad. It was yummy!! Diagonal to our booth was a cake designer (Lisa’s). She had the most beautiful cakes. But they were not just gorgeous, they were design well too. It is interesting to see the other vendors work. Some would put there booth up and have it ready the night before. Others would bring in some stuff the night before, and then add the rest that day (this was me). And even others would wait to the last moment right before 1:00pm to put their booth together. But when it comes to taking it down, I believe when I left there was maybe one booth still cleaning up.
For all those I met on Sunday, thank you for stopping by and lending me your ear for a minute. Congratulations on your furture engagement. I pray that God blesses you and your spouse-to-be. Those that got a DVD demo, I hope you enjoyed it. Anyone that did not get one, I would love to get one in your hands. Just send me an email or give me a call.
Changes coming
You already notice some changes happening with the blog. I like to keep things pretty simple but eye catching as well. The main web site will be changing real soon, too. The reason I haven’t been on the blog and drop the ball on the 365 day project is because of the changes I am making and preparing for the bridal fair this Sunday, tomorrow. Here is a quick look at what is coming on the website.

If you are planning on getting married, come by and check out the bridal fair. I have a booth and would love to talk to you about your up coming wedding.
